I know, I know... I released this song during my Rest Stop Series a few months back. While shooting a video for my song "Applaud", we had given the girls that were invited to be in the video the back section of the location to get ready for shooting. Ali was being "house DJ" that day as he always is and so happened to be playing my Rest Stop mix. "Silent Beauty" came on and the girls there really enjoyed the vibe of the song. Ali came over to me and said that we should go ahead and shoot a little video for it because the song needs a visual. I thought it was a great idea because it was random and pretty much a case of "using what you have on hand". I had an idea to do it in front of the green screen with Man-Man on the drums. The funny thing about it was that since Man-Man is a true drummer, he was playing so LOUD that I could barely hear the song during playback lol haha good times...

Nonetheless, here it is for your enjoyment. Boi-1da produced the beat and was cool enough to let me rock with it.

My Debut Single "Applaud" from MARKYLAND, USA

I think that over the past couple of years I have displayed versatility, perseverance, class, quality, confidence, and a true appreciation for the culture and well-being of Hip-Hop as we know it. My journey is unlike any other (respectively), but I mean seriously, unlike ANY other. I been doing this since I was 11. I worked with Erick Sermon at 14, Big Daddy Kane at 16, signed to The Trackboyz (out of St. Louis - did J. Kwon's "Tipsy" & Nelly's "Air Force One's") at 17, had meetings with every Major label throughout, slept outside of the buildings waiting on meetings, jumped on tables, and the whole 9. Personally, I feel these stories are not a part of anyone's grind these days. When the music game changed and went completely viral - It was made as if my struggle up until that point meant NOTHING now because of that change. It went from 'How many people have you shot or drugs you sold?' to 'How many friends do you have on myspace?' My struggle looked me back in the face and said, "Marky, welcome to the music business."

'Applaud' came about while I was actually trying to get another song played locally in a DC nightclub. I was invited out to meet with this particular DJ at this new spot that opened up. I normally don't go out that much, but I decided to go and just observe what made people feel good while in these clubs. I was evaluating my culture of people and gauging their response to the first 4 measures of each song that would play since that's how they research songs at radio. One thing I realized is that a good cadence and heavy beat of any sort could grab people's attention instantly in the club. The particular song I had at the time was definitely not that. It was a great record - it just wasn't the right record. I remember thinking to myself that in order to be accepted around the globe, I must first be accepted by my own. I wanted something that was catchy, not too cliche, but bumpin', and most of all FUN! For some reason, EVERYBODY (no matter the nationality, spirituality, or race) do a "bop" once a song come on that they like or have this certain bounce to it. I also noticed that every guy became the song that was then playing at that time! So every guy was "Big Meech" when that came on, and so forth lol. This is all the idea of "APPLAUD" to me. Ladies can dance to it, fellas can Applaud them ;). But seriously, it's that feeling of being THE MAN in the club and YOUR record comes on! Our inner most celebrity desires! To be THAT GUY for the duration of THAT ONE SONG that makes you nod your head like "yeeeeeah sucka! Im doing big things!!!" It's a feeling that's damn near too hard to describe. I just know it all too well lol, secretly. Don't we all?

Produced by The Beastaz out of St. Louis - I knew that they could pull off exactly what I had visioned from that night out. Thanks to my experience in the MidWest and being from DC - I was able to pull off a perfect club record with "a little bit of this and a little bit of that". Each and every record I do is all a part of me. I'm just bringing you guys into who I am. Very complex in my core, yet easily understood upfront. My album MARKYLAND, USA will explain it all. I'm conscious that I represent the culture and ethics of hip-hop, and what it stands for globally & domestically. I'm trying to build a very lengthy career and TODAY is Day 1!

This record here....no, THIS RECORD HERE! Me basically having fun with what I think are just basic male rules of engagement. That is, being on a date or chillin' with a girl that you are so attracted, picking the right moment to ask, "is it cool if I ask can we f***?" Maybe not as blunt as that, but somewhere along them lines. I never know at what point is it cool to ask a female that lol. So the trick is to throw it in there respectfully (if thats even possible). I knew we needed a feature because it sounds like one of those records. I have a short-list of artist I'd like to work with and XV was on top of that list. He came off PERFECT on it! Exactly how I imagined it would be. He's even comical in his verse, so if you want a good laugh - CRANK THIS HERE!!!!!!!

Marky's Radio Promo Tour - VA-DC (12/9/10-12/11/10)

Leaving back out was such a surprise to me! I mean - not a surprise but it just came so quick. I celebrated my birthday on the 7th, so I only had Wed (Dec 8th) to recuperate from all of the running around prior. Since we were leaving early Thurs morning, I wasn't going to be able to get my EPK's pressed in time by the label. But me being me, I know how to get the job DONE! I succeeded in doing so.

Ali and Jay were leaving NY around 9/10am in route to DC to pick me up. That same morning I had to run to the Apple Store and Staples, then BACK home to get ready lol. We met up at a BestBuy and proceeded to Richmond, VA. There we met with DJ Lonnie B, DJ Flava, and A-Plus of Power 92.1. They really were feeling the record "Applaud" and my story on how I came to be. They were cool guys. After we left the station, we headed to Famous Dave's and just laughed and joked around. There, DJ Footz and Big Nat joined the party. We then headed to my boy DJ Gemini spot where we kicked back for a min and watched Gem tear "Applaud" to shreds! He was cutting that record with a KNIFE! lol He was DJ'ing at some spot in VA not too far from DC.

The next day we left for Norfolk, VA. I absolutely love the view/feeling when entering Norfolk. There's water on both sides of the bridge and it's just so breeeeeezy! We went straight to Ruby Tuesday's where we sat with DJ Radio Raheem, DJ Karee, & Ron Stewart (Interscope Records) joined us. I already had the chance to meet DJ Radio Raheem earlier this year with my homie Webstar on his promo run. I haven't had Ruby Tuesday's in awhile so I was excited about that lol. We discussed the current state of music and how the game is changing at a rapid rate. Good time.

We proceeded to 103 JAMZ where both DJ Karee and DJ Radio Raheem works. In the parking lot I met this production click called "Profound Sounds". They were dope! Upon entering the station, I met DJ Fountz. He was actually on air so we just crashed his show somewhat lol. He was a cool guy, funny guy too. He liked the "Applaud" record and threw it into his mix. We then did a nice interview to enlighten his listeners on who I am and what I'm about. I appreciated that.

That night, we went to party with DJ Babey Drew of 103 JAMZ at his spot that he DJ's. That was real cool. He played "Applaud" while the dance floor was crazy and the ppl reacted as if they heard it before. It seems like ppl like to be told what to do in hks (ie "drop it to the floor" etc) lol. I have this new infatuation with hearing my song in the club! fyi.

The next day in the afternoon, we set sail for Washington DC. I honestly didn't know what to expect because I've been at them stations so many times that I figured I'd go gray O_o. I was glad to see that we were scheduled to meet with DJ Nina 9 of the HipHop Nation show on XM/Serius Radio. I did a cpl drops and we kicked it for a sec in the studio. From there, we went to check in at the hotel and got prepared for that nights events. We met up with DJ Alizay at Recess where it was jammed pack! Zay had the place rockin'! He dropped and "Applaud" and again, the reaction was niiiiiiiiiice. Some ppl were even clapping to the hk and mouthing the words. Good feeling.

I'm thankful that I'm ending the year off strong! I started it that way, so it's only right I finish it that way. I have steam headed into the top of the new year. There will be no stopping this train! The music is great, done, and finished. My entire outfit is strong. I refuse to let the negativity play inside my Arena. However, I will say this - "I'm overcharging n****'s for what they did to the Cold Crush." - Jigga :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

I just started my very FIRST Radio Promo Tour and I am pumped up about my single and the music that I'll be releasing virally! Awe man, so many ideas and projects are coming your way. Of coarse they'll be neat and organized.

Marky's Radio Promo Tour - Connecticut & Boston (12/3/10-12/4/10)

   Yesterday, I started off in Connecticut at HOT 93.7! It was Mixers Meeting where basically you get to sit with the DJ's and Radio Personalities to play them your single and introduce yourself to them. Jay Andino is our radio guy from SRC/Universal so he started things off because he knows all of the guys. Then I took the floor and explained my journey up til this point. The guys were all cool and extremely happy with the Food we sponsored :). They were partying, bouncing, and applauding to "Applaud". I was like WOW! It made me feel great inside, ya know... The one guy DJ Wrexx had me replay the record. It was great talking to all of the guys and getting to meet them all now early in my career. I know how important they are and will continue to be for my career. I'm super appreciative. Mickey Factz and Shawn Christopher also came thru a short while afterwards. It was good seeing new faces and artist on the road working trying to push to be heard by the masses.

   Love goes to Joey Franchize, DJ Craig G, DJ Wrexx, DJ Hawk, DJ KG, DJ Big Man, DJ Kurupt, Vezzy and Big Regg! The entire Hot 97.3 Family!

   After leaving the mixers meeting, we hopped in the Suburban and headed straight to Baaaaaaston! (Boston) Upon arriving, we headed straight the hotel. We were staying at the Le Meridan! Nice, right!? Lol it was def laid out! We only had time to drop our bags off and roll out. From there, we went up to Jam'N 94.5 to meet up with the DJs there. DJ Lus met us down at the door and we walked up to greet all of the rest of the guys. DJ Pup Dawg greeted us and introduced me to the rest of the squad. I took pics with everyone and did a few drops before we headed across the road for dinner at a place called Yoki. We had a great dinner while watching the Celtics play the Bulls. They were all great guys and were def encouraging to me. Oh wait! I forgot, on the way to Boston DJ Pup Dawg hit Jay and told him to "Tune in!". As soon as we turned the dial, "Applaud for that ahh..." was being mixed into a Keri Hilson record! I was on the edge of my seat! It was my first time hearing the song on the radio in person! I felt the Jackson 5 when they first heard themselves on the radio in that movie lol. Ah! Great feeling, I assure you. Ok, fast-forward to after dinner. We headed to this spot called "Whiskey Priest". DJ Vince was spinning so we went to say what up! He too played "Applaud" during his set and the ppl were partying like the knew the song, literally! It was hilarious, but it too was a great feeling. The song sounds great in the club! The bass is smooth and vibrant. It's intoxicating. I'm more of an observer at clubs since I don't drink or smoke. I just be chillin beside the DJ and laughing with Demo, Jay, & Ali. DJ Pup Dawg was taken care of us the entire night so we were good. The club-goers were all nice ppl and were having a great time dancing, hands up!

   Later on after we left, we just headed back to the room and laughed & joked around. We discussed a bunch of different topics from music, to Illuminati, to the Jellys Beans in our rooms being $6!!!! Hahaha crazy

   Today - I had an on air interview with DJ Hustle Simmons. It went great! Dude was real cool. After that, we went to eat and headed on way to CT. That's where we are now. On the ROAD!!!! lol

The Night Before my FIRST Promo Tour!

Ok - I'm going to try things a lil' different with my "blog" now. With all of these social networks and their regulations with characters you can use, I find it more efficient to just use my blog to express my journey and thoughts on my life THEN post an update on Facebook/Twitter making you guys aware of the newest & latest post. Get me? good.

I'm in route to NY via The Megabus that leaves from Chinatown. All night long while packing, I couldn't help but go thru all of my hiphop DVDs and posters that I had for inspiration. I've been pursuing this dream for so long that during the process I went from a boy to a young man. Sometimes I forget how innocence (in music) feels. Like - me only being concerned about the music part of things, ya know?... To be leaving out on my first ever Radio Tour is a GIANT leap for me. I dreamed of this since I first signed my recording contract. I worked hard to get to this point. I was so excited, that I had told Jerry (My A&R) to read me off the cities over the phone. He had refused to send me the emails that were bouncing around lol. I just wanted to see what was in "speculation" - feel me lol. Upon seeing the cities my first thought took me back to the PS2 game "NBA Street"! I figure the reason being was because the first city I noticed was Boston and I remember Boston was the first tough king opponent on the game. So random - but so what! Haha

Aight, folks - I'm on this bus kinda tired. I almost over slept this morning. Luckily, I was committed to finishing this post (thanks iPhone!). Now, Facebook cannot hold me back from posting as many paragraphs that I please. :)

We shot the video when I went Ghost Hunting for the first time! It was CRAZY! Probably never do it again, but nonetheless - a FUN and INTERESTING video came of it lol.

"Rasta Monsta" is the 2nd record off of my 1st installment of my 3 EP's. The first EP is "Journey to Markyland, USA: Rest Stop 1" Presented by 2DopeBoyz x OnSmash and will be released April 5th.

Ok so.. I'm a huge fan of the "Entourage" Series Show on HBO just like
the rest of the world lol. I caught on to the show around the 3rd
Season and then went back and started at Season 1 to catch myself up.
Now comes this new show "How To Make It In America" that I think has
the same feel but it's a little, or MUCH rather, more gritty and
"about the grind-ish". It's already 6 Episodes in and for some reason
I can't stop singing the got damn theme song by Aloe Blacc titled "I
Need A Dollar". I figured, "hey, why not throw my 1, 2 on it!" lol

I had this track for a min now. It's said to be an original Kanye West produced track from the "Through The Wire" days, even thou I don't know for sure. I received it from a mutual connect to him because I was going to possibly be doing work with them (not Kanye). Anyway - dude gave me an entire cd full of all original Kanye beats. This was in 2004, I think..

The track is about me winning my race before it starts. Nobody is in charge of my fate or destiny in my life except God. I believe that each and everyday I wake up. The music industry is full of deception and flakey business practices. I know that if I keep my eyes on the finish line then God will make sure I win like I'm suppose to. Can't nobody block what's coming to me. Its inevitable.

For the past couple of months this Washington, D.C. rapper has stayed out of the limelight and media attention, determined to improve and focus on his music. “Nothing is 43ver” is the result of this inspired seclusion - a project nothing short of amazing.

“When Amazing Happens” demonstrates the growth of this young artist as he lyrically maneuvers through the song with clever metaphors and similes. Similarly, “The Master Piece” showcases Marky’s diverse lyrical repertoire as he raps about the struggles of making it in this industry. He proclaims with unique introspection, “It’s seems like they are out of self / Just them alone, nobody else/ I mean you are not responsible for someone’s wealth / But it’s like we sell dreams just to charge for help.”

Standout tracks on the album are “City On My Back”, “When Amazing Happens”, and “That’s Why They Love Me.” In similar form to how Young Jeezy and Kanye West repped where they were from on “Put On”, Marky proudly exhibits his DC roots with “City On My Back.” This track goes so hard, and hopefully DC radio (come on WPGC and WKYS) can visualize the representation of this song.

Although the majority of the album has a dark and somber feel to it, “That’s Why They Love Me” provides that unique contrast with a kind of track you would listen to on a Friday night before going out, causing you to exclaim as you prep yourself: “Damn I look famous!”

This is definitely one of the best projects coming out of the DMV for a while, and I hope to see it garner the recognition it deserves. I can tell Marky is an artist who has come a long way from “Homework” to “Nothing is 43er.” Marky truly deserves that “Sweet Taste of Victory.”"

You may be familiar with me, you may not. You may have heard the name before, you may've not. But just incase you haven't, allow me to bring you up to speed. My name is Marky and Im from Washington, DC. I signed to Studio43/SRC/UniversalRecords in 2008. My artistry derives from my imagination. My take to a song is whatever I feel at the time due to the music itself. I approach it like a "blank sheet of paper". I've been doing hip-hop since I was 11, and been leaping hurdles ever since. I got with Kenny Burns' Studio 43 in 2007 and released my debut mix-tape "Homework" (assisted by Judah) Sept. 1st of 2007. This is just a brief introduction of me, to you.

Fast-forward. After my deal, Steve Rifkind decided to allow us to release a song of mine that he'd just heard called "Sheila" as a record just to generate interest. In fact, every time I see him, he's singing "Oh, Oh sheeeeeeilaaa..." to me!!! He says its one of his all time favorite records. Thats a HUGE compliment coming from a hip-hop mogul such as himself. The response was overwhelming! So i knew I had to release something ASAP! Mind you, during this period I'm working relentlessly on my debut album as well so I wasn't really working on anything aside of that. I figured that I had to make sure Universal was SUPER-EXCITED when they heard my potential singles and other records off of the album, so my mind was occupied by that. But once Steve Rifkind sung my song to me in person, I knew that I was on the right path and now I have to give the people (fans, bloggers alike) something more to bump while Im constructing the album. This thought, lead to "Homework 4.3" with World Renown DJ Mick Boogie released May 24th, 2008. I had a ton of records in my vault that I was doing that were "coastal hip-hop" driven. Like the LA inspired "Gucci Sweats" to the early NY sound/flow hue in "Hold it Now". I also used this mix-tape to revamp the previous mixtape ("Homework") and re-birth some of those records alongside the new and fun records that I added. Idk, you be the judge...lol

A month later, I found myself flying high above the country on a plane headed to sun-shine LA for the BET Awards, and a few weeks laterThe MTV Music Awards. These were my first award show attendances, and MAN, I assure you that they won't be my last! While out there I felt the vibes that Jimi Hendrix once felt ass he stroked his electric guitar, or Dr. Dre felt as he put his last synth in 'California LoVe", or Kobe and Shaq felt to win a Championship at the Staples Center. I've been to LA a few times before, but not in this degree,never as a signed artist. I had the chance to visit some of the hot spots there. Including The Supreme store, Unlimited, and many others. At The Hundreds store, I was surprised that the crew there knew who I was because of "Gucci Sweats" off of "Homework 4.3"! That tripped me out man because we're wayyyy across the country and they bumping me out here, and Im not even famous yet!WOW! This trip was most definitely enough to grind my gears into a mode to produce another mix-tape to show growth and a lil insight into my artistry. Hence, "The Drive-Thru" w/ Mick Boogie was released Sept. 8th, 2008. This mix-tape was definitely my best thus far in terms of presence and versatility. I go from the Radiohead feature "Jigsaw Falling Into Place", to a self-cross examination in "Metamorphosis". The songs are visually inspiring and artistically satisfying. I can picture me live on stage alongside a band rocking out to these records! Once again...you be the judge

Almost a year into my record deal, 3 successful mix-tapes under my belt, and a well known name in the online music world, I am ready to release my newest project "Nothing is 43ver" - set date of release, April 3rd, 2009. This project is a more in-depth and theatrical look in to Marky, me. Im not calling this endeavor a mix-tape; its better characterized as a "Mini-Album" (not EP) because of thequality of the music and the integrity of the project. Having a record deal is a GREAT accomplishment for any artist. We all know that it is not an easy task in any way. I definitely know first hand! During the coarse of me working on my album and trying to keep my head above water in the ever-changing sea of the music industry, I encountered a lot of road-blocks and, what appeared to be, dead-ends. People have changed left and right, and even think that because "I" have a deal, then "they" have a deal hahaha - funny right? But seriously, I've been through a lot prior the deal, but now - this is what I guess Nelly and Erick Sermon was telling me when they said that, "the deal is easy part, the hard part is afterwards." I couldn't even imagine that years and years later, I'd be like, "DAMN, they were exactly right." Now, I understand why people are such ass-holes once they get in power positions and all. You almost HAVE TO BE! Especially when it's internally; your "supposed" team. I know this isn't anything new, it happens everyday in this game. I can't really express everything in-depth like I want to right now, but LUCKILY, I've constructed a MASTERPIECE for you. Respectfully titled "Nothing is 43ver". So although we go through tough times, just know that tough times doesn't last 43ver.

YO! Its been a CRAZY start to this new year...forgive my M.I.A-ness :o)

Well, the status on me is that Im "waiting" for my date to go present my singles to Universal.

Big UPS to Lil'Weezy for them 4 Grams (Grammy's) the other night. He's a fellow label-mate of mine at Universal so that most inspiring to me. (The leap he did was funny)

Yeah - the industry insiders are all shady, in my opinion.

People do "Sale" dreams, just to "Charge" for help. Its super shady man lol

But - see the thing is that we're young. Youth will always give us "up-and-coming", the upper hand in this Poker/Chess game with the industry. No matter what industry you're in.

I've realized that no matter

how much money a person has or fame or ego, they'll ALWAYS be the same "jealous, shady, funny-acting, nice, good-willing, etc" person they are.

We all know, and say, money changes people. But it changes your address and habits lol

I'm at peace with anger - I been at peace with anger and frustration for a minute now. Im good in my space.

I have a wonderful life and an even more prosperous life ahead of me promised by God.

I know longer trip off of what's not happening, what is happening, or what COULD POSSIBLY be happening. The realization of it all is that my destiny is ultimately in Gods' hands. Thats who got me as far as I am, not an individual(s).

By now ya'll know Im a "Critical Thinker" - thats stamped.

I feel like this is my gift and curse ya know?

For example...*clears throat*... when communication fails and things seem slow at times, Im guessing our minds wander off and WE ALL get in the "Critical Thinker" mode, right?

Well, I feel like majority of the times I PERSONALLY go in overdrive with it lol.

Not a bad thing tho - but sometimes when things don't work out and you feel as tho you're not in a good space mentally for the moment, this "overdrive" can become a CANCER...called STRESS.

I believe that stress is a performance hinderance, and can make things and/or events, aswell as people, appear different than what they are.

You feel me?...

Like, it can lead to irrational decisions and thoughts.

The type of person I am - I don't act off emotions.

Granted. Im human - I can only bare so much but my person is not of that stature.

I take things in (good and bad) and process it "Critically".

KB told me that "sometimes you take on things much greater than you have to at the moment but thats just the leader you are on the inside."

I believe I take on things...no...I think too hard and long on things that aren't even worth my thoughts.

Do you guys do this sometimes too? Im just wondering, I wanna know if Im alone in this lol

I was listening to Steve Harvey Morning Show yesterday NO monday morning and he opened the show talking about when you're reaching for a goal MUCH GREATER than any typical normal goal, your trials and tribulations are MUCH GREATER as well.

Sometimes we, as artist/entrepreneurs/actors/etc, need to hear these inspirational messages.

Steve went on to say that God is waiting for you to ask him for his helping hand.

He said that people with little problems like "man, I need that $5 for gas..." aren't on that level of understanding the bigger picture at hand, not only yours but even their own. tisk tisk tisk

I agree totally.

And, we all in one way or another live above our means...but get this, working hard can be mistaken for struggling when thats not the case.

When you're working hard for something and you live LiFe to the most UMPH DEGREE possible, you aren't struggling - but rather fulfilling your life and living the bigger picture in real-time.

Sometimes its hard for me to appreciate my record deal cuz I want so much more.

I MOST DEF appreciate it but I think I forget where I was 6 months ago at times due to whats NOT happening and blazay blah...

I also understand there is NOTHING wrong with me wanting to achieve so much more post the deal.

I just cannot allow what seems to be NOT happening, become negativity in my space which becomes a cancer to my performance.

But when I look around me, I realize how blessed I am to be in my position.

So although I may sometimes be in my "Critical Thinker" mode at times, I have to keep my sights set at the BIGGER PICTURE!

right?

then shit, I vision a movie - my journey in my mind is so profound and its own visionary, I don't think I could express it via song or blog.

Lastnight I was having a heart to heart with my grandma (mama) and after hearing me tell her my bit on my future and plans, she told me, "I bet make God laugh alot." Im like "...wuhh?" lol

She says, "yeah, you make him laugh by telling him YOUR plans when he already have a plan for you FAR BEYOND you can fathom in your wildest and most extreme dream or fantasy."

I truly believe my path, and yours, is already laid out for us - we're just walking it.

We think we have it all figured out and al that good stuff, atleast I do sometimes but we have to remember these things. Let GO and Let GOD.

Thats why there is no need for hating on one another because you can only be who you are at the end of the day and your path is already laid out for you.

So if somebody else wins the contest and not you - it wasn't meant for you to win.

God doesn't make mistakes.

Just believe that and say that to yourself when you feel down and out - it'll restore the feeling of comfort 1,000,000,000% gauranteed

It seemed simple one day after watching LL Cool J's Driven on VH1.

He looked on the back of a tape, wrote down the address, and sent off his lil demo - BOOM!

Didn't hear nothing back for years, matter of fact, STILL haven't heard anything back from them niggs/niggettes.

As the years progress and me being the "Critical Thinker/Observer" I am/becoming, I start to understand the ins and outs of actually having a deal.

Like, I understand the difference of the artist you are BEFORE the deal and after.

and guess what it is?...No difference

You don't get a deal off:

*skill level

*you're talented (besides being Gods Gift to the world)

*you dress nice

*you have 1,000,877.6 mixtapes out

*you do ALL open mics, talent shows, etc

Idk...it's all good now because I actually have a deal with Universal but just as I thought - things aren't as easy as they seem.

For an artist man, its all about the music - and indeed it should be.

I said to myself, "Marky, you focus on your music and being creative with each and every song you do this way you'll stay motivated and youthfully inspired"

yeah, all sounds good until "things" start changing around you.

I call these "things" *Factors* or *Variables* , sort of like Science Class lol

these variables sometimes are the essential pieces of the puzzle and one wrong move can lead

to...JENGA!!!! (google it)

Man oh man, the music industry is crazy so its hard to keep yourself 90% into the MUSIC and 10% into whats happening in your career (business wise), into the politics, into who's who, and then into the way music is changing everyday. (Thanks to Blogs tho, we can manage!)

You find yourself at about, uhm, damn near 50%/50% ya know...

and me, being the "Critical Thinker" I am makes the 50/50 seem more like 80/20, go figure!

I remember earlier this year I think...or no, it was around this time last year that Saigon was like, "I QUIT this rap game!"

Im like, how the hell you gonna quit man - you're signed dude!

This is what Im thinking while reading his blog.

This man had a nice lil buzz, was on Entourage, and signed to Atlantic Records via Just Blaze!

But then, I thought - there has to be a lot of BS behind the scenes that unsigned artist don't fully know about.

As far back as I can remember, I thought that getting a Record Deal was the victory!

That is what all the grind work is for ya know?...WRONG

You know what getting a deal means?...huh?

Well, incase you don't/didn't know - a deal means you have 1 shot and a deadline.

1 shot to pull something significant off business wise, which means bring the label back more than they dish out.

So you know those who brag on "BIG BUDGETS" and "oh, I got a 1 million dollar contract" - well, thats great but that heightens the chance of failure and null-n-void of your contract thanx to this music climate - not to say that the money doesn't/can't play a HUGE factor in your success (ie music spins on radio, video plays on tv, commercials, endorsements, etc) .

Thanx to internet and other means of stabilizing the marketplace using your own resources to get to where you need to be, smaller deals are the new "Big Budgets", I think...

Now, selling isn't a big deal anymore because of the digital marketplace and your quota (whether high or low in the sales dept - all depends on your deal structure).

The other definition of having a Record Deal, to me, is Deadline.

yeah, a deadline until you are released to the world as this artist that you are at this moment of release! (re-read slowly if it doesn't make sense lol)

What I mean is that you are now on a race across the USA to touch as many people as possible with your music.

ok, I relate it to politics - Obama wasn't as popular roughly 1 1/2 years ago right?

Well, he got on the campaign run across the country and touched the people - made them believe and feel like they are apart of him.

Back over to music - now if your music isn't all that tight meaning can't match up to what's hot now, you're coma-toast son... unless you're uniquely different lol (and not because your clothes fit extra tight)

If you can't produce something the label likes within a certain period of time w/o over extending your budget or for whatever reason, they'll drop you.

Oh man, I forgot about that point - yeah, they'll drop your ass in a heartbeat.

but the point I was talking about is now the pressures on up until your album drop to touch as many people as possible and have them believe you and feel like they are apart of you.

Before you are signed, you can go as you please.

You can develop, change your style up, try new things.

Well, all is changed once you're signed.

You can still try new things and all that, but no time - you're racing against the clock.

Note that there are 4 quarters to a year.

Jan-March (1st) Apr-June (2nd) July-Sept (3rd) Oct-Dec (4th)

These are essential in understanding buyers and customers.

People shop more when?

around holidays (obviously, due to deals and whatnot) but when else?...when the suns out! (2nd and 3rd maybe right)

Well, thats another breakdown for you guys later...but needless to say a deal isn't what you guys think it is.

I have to get across the world and I don't mean by feet neither or doing shows everywhere I touch down.

I mean radio, video, billboards, etc.

This is the resources that seems to make people BELIEVE that you are a STAR ya know?

Nobody knows you until your song is HOT and playing about 30-50 times a week.

and the messed up part about it is...its out of our (the artist) control on the first go around.

And like I said, you only get 1 shot - but its not me aiming the gun.

Aight, so I was in ATL a couple of weeks ago for 2 long dreaded WEEKS (horror music plays!) lol.

All was cool for the most part except I occasionally go off into my "Critical Thinking" mode that sort depresses me for moments at a time.

Anyway - I was laying across my bed fucking with this itouch that I just purchased before I left home and I was gonna put games on it cuz the joint shifts and shit when I turn it and all that fun innovative stuff :-D.

I got prompted to sign in with my username (Markdef) and password (noneyabitness lol), then I saw my itunes account had $50 in it!!!

I was syce like shit!!!

So I'm on this whole "purchase cd's" kick, don't bootleg or download illegally although I don't even know what that MEANS to download illegally lmao.

Im browsing through artist such as TI and Young Jeezy who just released albums but I couldnt press "purchase".

They were only $9.99 but I just KNEW that I wasn't gonna listen to their music and take anything from it ya know?

When I was younger, I was real into artist because I wanted to know how to be myself and be a star like they were in my eyes.

Now tho, due to life experiences and gained testosterone, them days of taking from others and adding it to myself is GYONE!

So, it was actually difficult clicking purchase on the itunes thing.

I didn't purchase nothing but the movie "21" and "Wrong Turn 2".

Now, me being the "Critical Thinker" that I am lead me to believe Im a "hater" or "jealous" of these artist.

Maybe because they are established already, have fans, and money.

or maybe because their music is better than mine, idk.

So now Im tripping like "damn, wtf is the issue with me joe?"

Fast-forward to now, yesterday I was rearranging my studio and my entire room for that matter when I realized that all the good music is free.

I actually got an email to my phone from D. Omen saying "Download G*Two new mixtape" that sparked this "Critical Thinker" moment with myself.

I paused for a sec, got online and went to my gmail account.

I sent D. Omen an aim thing and was like "send me ya mixtape..."

Indeed he did, and I went on an all-out MANHUNT for the free music thats worth the $9.99 I would've paid for the TI joint or Jeezy.

Nando, D. Omen, Lyriciss, G*Two, Young Doc, X.O., Ra The MC - I put these guys/gals mixtapes on my itouch and let it blast while I resumed cleaning my room/studio.

I was all excited in the inside (no homo) but it was refreshing feeling!

I haven't felt this way since..................uhm.............shit, I was a kid admiring the artists on tv like I said earlier.

It was all making sense now!

These people do music because they LoVe it and/or have fun doing it!

I miss that feeling and sometimes I have to revert to my younger rapping days when it wasnt so serious.

I just did it for the LoVe and the fun of hearing myself say funny shit - like "Sheila" for instance lol

I did it all in fun, but Universal fell in LoVe with it lol. (pushed back til Spring tho lol)

I don't get that out of the TI's and Jeezy's.

Ya'll may do, but I don't man.

...but I do out of YOU all's music in our lil arena.

Nando had text me later on that day and was like "son, you listened to it?" sort of wondering what I was gonna think I guess cause Im "Marky" (crowd boo's) lol

I told'em like this, "son, ya'll can do NO WRONG in my book - all ya'll inspire me".

Im definitely a fan of all this YOUNG independent music thats circulating in our own arena.

We are keeping each other a float and we don't even know it.

All the Hate I get for being me, rapping, or just cuz Im 43 (post Wale) is crazy because all I do is what I do and thats make music thats cool to listen to and not take a certain way.

Its like dudes mad cuz I was born or some shit lol.

Idk, but to all ya'll guys/gals out there in this arena...Im a fan first!

Just know that the breakthrough is gonna come.

We build each other up, and break each other down.
